A day to remember, all round.
The camera turned up bright and early on Monday morning, as promised! There was enough packing to sink a battleship, but finally I took it out and with a high degree of trepidation, turned it on. It Worked! The office all cheered (or not as the case maybe).
This is the sample photo that those nice people at the Sony Repair Centre took to test that the camera was working:
